Soak rice and dals together for 3 hours with dried chillies.
Grind to a slightly coarse batter with ginger and enough water; add salt and asafoetida.
Stir in chopped curry leaves and onion if using.
Spread the batter a little thicker than dosa on a hot tawa and cook both sides with a few drops of oil.
Unlike dosa batter, adai batter does not need overnight fermentation. Nutrition values are approximate per serving.
